The Problem

Although progress has been made in terms of gender equality, with women now comprising 26% of executive leadership teams,
there is still a stark underrepresentation of women in leadership, particularly in CEO roles, with only 18 (6.2%) of the top 300 ASX-

listed companies being led by women. The numbers illustrate just how far we still have to go in terms of empowering women leaders.

Women and middle managers are leading the great resignation wave, and female workforce participation rates are dropping.

1 OUT OF 23

CEO appointments in 2021 for the ASX 300 was a woman.

Since 2017, the percentage of women CEOs has stagnated at:

0%

A recent survey by Women & Leadership Australia found that:

0%

of women were
concerned about

navigating bias at work.

0%

of women stated they felt there was
a lack of
advancement
opportunities.

These statistics underscore the urgent need for systemic changes to promote gender equality in leadership.

A Case For Change

There is significant and compelling evidence that supports the need for further investment in the empowerment of women leaders at all levels of organisations.

32

companies in the S&P 500 led by female CEOs  significantly outperformed the companies run by men. The ten-year returns rate for female-led companies was

324%

compared with 261% for male-led companies.

Companies with women executives are

0%

more likely to outperform other companies.

Women leaders strive for diversity more than men. A recent study found that where a CEO is a woman.
0%

of board members are also women. With male CEO’s, the number is as low as 26%

Surely this compelling evidence highlights a shift in how we approach leadership development for women. A change is imperative. And to achieve sustainable change, a collective effort that emphasises the need for teams and cohorts of women in leadership roles, rather than just isolated instances, is essential. The data underscores the untapped potential that gender diversity holds for organisational success.
